Where Is My Crown Being Made?
This is a question that not many people think about when they are having a crown made, but it is something they probably should. Did you know that many dentists source the dental crowns they use from overseas dental labs?
It’s quite common practice among some dentists to obtain dental crowns from low cost countries such as China, India and Thailand, and there is currently no requirement for them to disclose this to patients.
The reason some dentists do this is to save money, however with this comes a loss of certainty about the quality of the product and the safety of the materials used. In Australia, the materials used in crowns have to undergo stringent testing and meet the high standards of Therapeutic Goods Australia (TGA) to ensure they are ‘safe’ before they can be used on patients, other countries don’t have this stringent approval process. We don’t know what materials are in crowns from overseas, which means really we don’t whether they could cause health problems in patients who have them.
At Debra Brown Dental, we only use Australian made dental crowns, made locally in a dental lab in Sarina (about 20 minutes drive from Mackay). We do this so we can be 100% certain that the materials used in the crown are safe and that a quality product is being placed in our patient’s mouths.
Also an increasing numbers of jobs are being lost in Australia, due to ‘outsourcing’ to lower cost overseas countries, we should be supporting the Australian dental laboratory workforce and keeping our money here.
When crowns are made in Australia, we all share the benefits.
