Which Toothbrush (Toothpaste and Floss) Do Dentists Really Recommend?

There is a vast selection of dental products on the market and it is difficult for consumers to decide what is best for them. These are my recommendations and a few things to help you to decide which products you should buy.

Manual (hand held/ non electric) toothbrush choose one that has:

  • Small head (it is easier to reach into hard to reach areas)
  • Soft bristles (medium and hard toothbrushes can wear away enamel over time)
  • Angled head (so it is easier to reach the back teeth)
  • My personal favourite is the Curaden CS5460 toothbrush (we sell these at our practice) or Colgate 360 sensitive pro-relief – they are both lovely soft brushes.

Electric toothbrushes can do a better job than a manual toothbrush, as they have a smaller head, are gentler on the teeth and gums and usually have a timer to let you know when you have spent enough time brushing (i.e. 2 minutes).

  • My personal favourite is the Oral B Vitality Precision Clean, they cost about $40 and are simple and do everything you need them to do.

For toothpaste, the most important thing is that it contains fluoride. We recommend care with whitening toothpastes that are abrasive (as they can wear teeth away).

  • My personal favourite is Colgate Total.
  • Some people have special dental needs and at higher risk of dental problems, so they may need higher strength products only available at dental offices, speak to your dentist if you think you may need to use these products.

I know no one likes to do it, but flossing is really important; brushing only cleans about 50% of the surfaces of your teeth, therefore if you brush perfectly and don’t floss you can still get lots of holes in your teeth.

  • My personal favourite floss products are: Oral B ultra floss, Reach floss holder and Pixster floss picks.

There are a 3 things important for preventing dental problems, they are: brushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride for 2 minutes, twice a day; flossing (once a day) and regular dental check-ups.
